The Emerson Collective:
The Dream Act
Working with the Emerson Collective's Immigration team's initiative, SYPartners helped develop a mobile-based conversation toolkit around the Dream Act for the Thanksgiving holiday—a time notorious for awkward family dinner conversations. The toolkit includes tips on how to come prepared to a potentially sticky situation and how to address apathy, opposition, and other scenarios.
Through the kit and Emerson's twitter, the website helped 200 people to call their Congress representative to support the Dream Act.
You can view the website here.
Nearly 2 million people will be affected by this decision. That's 1 in 20 people.
As the child of immigrant parents and the grandchild of a refugee, I realize how lucky I am to have citizenship. I can't imagine being told that I have to go back to a country where I can't read or write, or worse, being jailed for trying to stay in what I have always known to be my home. This is the reality many Dreamers are facing if the Dream Act is repealed. If you want to learn more, I highly encourage visiting the Emerson website. If you want to do more, I encourage you to call your representative. It makes a huge difference to the 2 million people wondering whether or not they'll be able to remain home after the holidays.
